| West Olive Power Plant - COAL! |
| Consumers Power is the largest power generating company in Michigan, supplying power to most every county in Michigan. Consumers built a new coal fired power plant in 1961 on Lake Michigan near the town of West Olive, Michigan. This year, 1967, the Soo Line has negotiated a coal delivery contract with Consumers and utilizing Chicago & Mackinac trackage. The Soo Line has delivered two older EMD FP-7 units to provide the power for the unit coal train, which will deliver Canadian coal to the power plant, via "The Chief" across the Straits of Mackinac. Here are some pictures of the newly modeled power plant and the inaugural run of the Unit Coal Train, delivering loaded coal hoppers to the plan. |
